Tomioka Silk Mill

Tomioka silk mill, located in the very center of the Tomioka city, will act not only as an important world heritage site, but also as a center of local community and industrial culture of the region. The inhabitants will associate their day to day life with the site as it will offer a shelter for wide range of social activities.

Drying hall in direct connection with the courtyard can benefit both from its central position and huge interior squared shaped space, ideal for multipurpose use. Here on the background of old machinery, formerly used for drying up cocoons, will be organised two level multipurpose space offering an overview of the underlying courtyard. With a minimal interventions, to provide the necessary background, the original structure will be maintained and preserved.
